Wiltshire – A Great County to visit
The country of England has many counties, each with its own characteristics and landscapes. One of these counties is the historic county of Wiltshire. Wiltshire is one of the many ceremonial counties of England, located in the South West region of England. Wiltshire is fully surrounded by other counties like Hampshire, Somerset, Berkshire, Oxfordshire etc. It has an area of 3485 km square. Wiltshire comprises of twenty one towns and the city of Salisbury. The county is known for its rich landscape and history.
Wiltshire is a historic county and played a vital in the history of England. Many historic battles were fought out in this county that is believed to be grown out of Wilton. Notable among these battles are Alfred’s defeat Of the Danes, civil war battle of Round way hill Devizes and others as well. Historically, Wiltshire was also known for its woolen products and the mills that produced it.
But today, Wiltshire is known for its great landscapes and breathtaking scenery. Most of Wiltshire is covered with greenery on tops of plains and small hills, giving it a rural look. Similarly the climate of Wiltshire is temperate one. Usually the county is wet and has a mild weather. January is considered to be the coldest and months of July August have the hottest temperature of around 21 degree C. The summers are sunny and have lots of sunshine whereas winters are having usually cloudy and murky outlook. It also snows in winter around the months of November to March.
Wiltshire is a great county for tourism because of great history, the amazing landscapes and a climate that is much slighter than the rest of England. But regardless of all its outstanding beauty, what attract the whole world towards this great county are the sites of Stonehenge and Avebury. Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument of stones standing in circle in the middle of fields. These mysterious and amazing stone shaped circles fascinate visitors from all over the world. Similar to Stonehenge are the mysterious and complex stones circles of Avebury. These are also a great attraction for the visitors. Due to its history, Wiltshire attracts historian especially and other public to its museums as well. Among the many museums that Wiltshire possesses, Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum is the most notable one. The gardens and country houses offer great vacation spots for the people of England and elsewhere. The twenty-one towns of Wiltshire also offer great attraction with their market towns to wander around leisurely and enjoy the simple life shops of these towns.
The county of Wiltshire is has a diverse taste in culture and arts as well. Most famous among these is the Salisbury Cathedral in the only city of Salisbury. This cathedral was built in the medieval times and has a fantastic architecture. Wiltshire is culturally rich and holds a number of festivals as well every year that portray the rich culture and people of Wiltshire. Notable among these are the festivals of Larmer Tree and the Wootton Bassett Arts Festival. Wiltshire is a must visit place to visit in England for all the sight seers.
